Janata college is situated at Kabuganj at a distance of 20 Km to the South-East of Silchar on the National Highway 54 in the District of Cachar. From the time it was established, the institution has been striving relentlessly to enlighten the rural populace through higher education in an area predominantly inhabited by those belonging to SC, ST(H), ST(P), Tea Garden Labourers, OBC and MOBC.
This institute is the only co-educational institute in the valley with a pretty large enrollment of girls. During the last four decades the college, the only college of prominence in an area stretching from Silchar to Mizoram, has contributed immensely towards the educational development of the needy and marginalized sections of people here. Initially the College did not have it own building.
On the 1st July 1964 it started its journey with a limited number of students of Pre-University class at L.C. High School, Kabuganj in the morning shift. The foundation stone was laid in the same year. The College has altogether 23 bighas of land of which 18 bighas are in one plot.
The College was affliated to Gauhati University up till the end of 1993 later the College came under the jurisdiction of Assam University, SIlchar in 1994 when Assam University came into existence. The College was taken over by the Government of Assam under the Deficit System of Grants-in-aid on 1st December 1975 and brought under Provincialised system on 1st December 2005. The College received recognition from UGC, Delhi under 2(F) and 12(B) of UGC rule.
